In a Montessori environment, we don’t call these “toys.” We call them works. While it might seem like a small distinction, this terminology reflects our deep respect for the child’s natural desire to learn, grow, and contribute to their world.

What Exactly Are Montessori “Works”?

Montessori works are scientifically designed materials created to support a child’s natural development. Unlike traditional toys, which often have one fixed way to play or are designed purely for entertainment, Montessori materials are purposeful tools.

Each work is designed to isolate a single concept or skill. For example, a set of “Color Tablets” doesn’t just entertain; it helps a child refine their visual discrimination by matching or grading colors from darkest to lightest.

Why We Use These Tools

At Jubilee Academy, our mission is to turn the hearts of children toward Christ and academic excellence. We believe that children are created with an inherent dignity and a “strong mind” that flourishes when given the right environment. We use these specific tools for three primary reasons:

• Hands-On Learning: Children, especially in the early years, learn through their senses. By physically handling a “Pink Tower” or tracing “Sandpaper Letters,” they internalize abstract concepts (like size or phonics) through concrete touch.
• The Control of Error: Many Montessori works are self-correcting. If a cylinder doesn’t fit into its hole or a pitcher of water spills, the child sees the result immediately. This allows them to problem-solve independently without needing an adult to say, “That’s wrong.” It builds a healthy, courageous mind that isn’t afraid of mistakes.
• Fostering Independence: Everything in our classroom is sized for the child. From the tiny pitchers in the toddler room to the complex math bead chains in the primary class, these tools empower children to say, “I can do it myself.”

How Works Are Presented: The Three-Step Journey

You might wonder how a child knows what to do with a tray of beads or a set of wooden maps. This happens through a very intentional process called a Presentation.

1. The Invitation: A teacher (or “Guide”) observes the child to see what they are ready for. When the moment is right, the Guide invites the child: “Would you like to see how we use the Golden Beads today?”
2. The Demonstration: The Guide sits beside the child and demonstrates the work with slow, precise movements and very few words. This allows the child to focus entirely on the hands and the material rather than being distracted by a long explanation.
3. The Practice: Once the presentation is finished, the work belongs to the child. They are free to repeat it as many times as they like. Repetition is where true mastery—and that beautiful state of “flow” or concentration—happens.

When prospective parents walk into a classroom at Jubilee Academy for the first time, they often notice the difference immediately. It’s quieter. Everything is at the child’s eye level. The materials look beautiful and intriguing, not just like standard toys. There are no rows of desks facing a teacher at a blackboard.

It looks different because it is different.

Choosing a school is one of the biggest decisions a parent makes. You’ve chosen Montessori for your child, but you might still be wondering: Where did this come from? Was it just a trend that stuck around?

The truth is, the Montessori method wasn’t merely “invented”; it was discovered through scientific observation. Its origins are rooted not in a posh private school, but in one of the poorest slums of early 20th-century Rome.

Here is the story of how, when, and why Montessori was created, and why it remains the foundation of everything we do at Jubilee Academy today.

To understand Montessori education, you have to understand Dr. Maria Montessori.

Maria Montessori was a trailblazer. At a time when women were rarely encouraged to pursue higher education, she became one of the first female physicians in Italy in 1896. She was a scientist first. Her background was in medicine, psychiatry, and anthropology.

The “Why”: The Initial Spark

Early in her medical career, Dr. Montessori worked in Rome’s asylums with children labeled as “deficient” or intellectually disabled. At the time, these children were practically warehoused in bare rooms, given nothing to do.

While observing them, Montessori noticed something profound. After meals, the children would crawl on the floor, anxiously picking up crumbs and manipulating them with their fingers.

Other doctors saw this as proof of their deficiency. Maria Montessori saw something else entirely: a desperate human craving for sensory stimulation and a desire to learn through touch.

She realized their problem wasn’t medical; it was pedagogical (educational).

She began designing manipulative materials—the ancestors of the materials your children use at Jubilee Academy today—to help them learn through their senses. The results were astounding. Under her guidance, these children, whom the world had discarded, learned to read and write. Many even passed the standard state exams typically given to “normal” children.

Maria was thrilled, but it led her to a burning question: If these methods could work miracles for children with significant cognitive hurdles, what could they do for typically developing children?

The “When” and “How”: The Miracle in the Slums

The opportunity to test her theory came in 1907.

In the San Lorenzo district of Rome—a notorious slum plagued by poverty and crime—developers were renovating tenement buildings. They had a problem: while parents were away working during the day, children ages 3 to 6 were left unsupervised, running wild and vandalizing the new buildings.

The developers approached Dr. Montessori. They offered her a room in the tenement to gather the children and keep them out of trouble.

She called it the Casa dei Bambini, or “Children’s House.”

When the school opened, the fifty or so children were described as unruly, tearful, and frightened. Dr. Montessori brought in her sensory materials, child-sized furniture (a revolutionary idea at the time!), and simply… observed.

What happened next stunned the educational world.

As the children began engaging with the materials, their behavior transformed. The “wild” children became deeply focused, calm, and orderly. They began to take pride in their environment, cleaning up after themselves. Most shockingly, without direct instruction, they “exploded” into writing and reading.

Dr. Montessori discovered that when children are placed in a “prepared environment” that respects their natural development, they don’t need to be forced to learn. They have an innate, insatiable drive to do it themselves.

One day, a child famously told her, “Help me to do it myself.” That became the cornerstone of her philosophy.

From Rome to Jubilee Academy

Dr. Montessori spent the rest of her life traveling the world, training teachers, observing children across different cultures, and refining her methods based on those scientific observations.

She proved that education isn’t about a teacher pouring facts into a child’s empty head. It is about igniting a flame that is already there.

This is why Montessori isn’t a fad. It has survived for over a century because it is based on universal truths about how human beings develop.

We are incredibly proud to have veterans as integral members of the Jubilee Academy family. Their stories of service provide powerful, tangible lessons for our students.

Our very own Lead Primary Teacher, Mrs. Kierra, is an outstanding example of this commitment. Before shaping young minds here at Jubilee, Mrs. Kierra served our nation as a Religious Affairs Specialist in the United States Army. Her service required compassion, organizational skills, and a commitment to the well-being of her fellow soldiers. These same qualities shine through every day in her classroom, where she leads with grace and dedication, fostering a supportive and structured learning environment.

A Day of Living History
Today, our students received a special gift: a chance to connect with history through the eyes of our veterans.

U.S. Air Force Technical Sergeant (Retired) Floyd Bullock, a vital member of the Jubilee family and a proud Vietnam Veteran, visited the class. He shared various items from his service, offering a tangible link to a different era of military life and sacrifice.

The students were also thrilled to meet U.S. Army Sergeant Tristin Lennert, a dedicated Jubilee Dad and Global War on Terror Veteran. Sergeant Lennert allowed the children the unique and exciting opportunity to try on items like a Combat Helmet and goggles. This hands-on experience brought their classroom lessons on patriotism and service to life in a memorable way.

These interactions are invaluable. They teach our children respect, gratitude, and a deeper understanding of the commitment it takes to defend our nation.

At Jubilee, we believe that God has planted seeds of promise within each child. As we nurture those seeds of promise and potential, we get to watch our amazing children blossom and bloom, from the inside out!

Each year, everyone (even the toddlers) takes part in planting, nurturing and harvesting our “Jubilee Salvation Garden”. We see examples daily of what it takes for our plants (and ourselves) to grow, blossom and bloom where we are planted!

God shows us daily practical life lessons about weeds that creep up, bad critters and helpful ones, sunshine, water and all the care that goes into a garden in order to harvest wonderful vegetables and beautiful flowers. We are able to talk about how these apply to our own lives as God nurtures us to fruition for His Kingdom!

It’s fun and meaningful work!

This year, we are so thankful to the Main Street Rotary Club for giving our garden a complete makeover with a real design including new raised beds and a marvelous mulch pathway!
